Our task was to create a contemporary kitchen in a new home located on the water with a strong
connection to nature. The palate of materials in the kitchen was to chosen to blend with the
house interiors in this open floor plan.
The perimeter of the kitchen features lightened Paldao cabinets and panels, a beautiful hardwood with
straight grain throughout that likens itself to the forest of trees outside the home. Tall storage cabinets
with retractable doors are adjacent to the refrigerator and freezer columns that flank the sink. In
addition to the sink, dishwasher, and double trash, a set freezer drawers, roll-out shelves, and a can-
storage pull-out are found on this wall of cabinets.
The main island on axis with the main sink houses the induction cooktop, a prep sink, and wrap around
seating. A fumed oak clad flyover panel houses recessed lighting and an impressive hot-rolled steel
hood. Mirrored stainless steel panels sit above the flyover panel, concealing the complicated structure
that supports the panels and hood as well as the duct work that vents to the exterior. The mirrored
panels are set pack so the hood and panel appear to be floating in the space.
The secondary island contains a gas griddle, ice machine, two beverage centers, and seating for three is
centered on the main island in the opening which leads to the dining area. In addition to the flyover
panel, brown fumed oak panels are highlighted on the two islands.
A Paldao hutch cabinet on the wall behind the main island fits between a set of doors and a large
window. This cabinet houses a coffee system, a steam oven, two convection ovens & two warming
drawers. Ample adjustable tray dividers are housed above the ovens.
Hot rolled steel panels and concealed cabinets create a thick wall where the kitchen flows into the
adjacent dining area. The tall steel doors appear like panels when closed. These contain pull-out
drawers for ample pantry storage. The steel panels that wrap the opening overhead conceal recessed
fixtures that provide light to the island. Special MDF painted panels were made for the dining side of the
hot-rolled steel opening to insure a clean edge where the wall material met the steel.
